This full-day tour is designed to give you real access to all of it; not a rushed drive-by, but a genuine immersion. You’ll board a boat and cross the lake to visit two Uros communities, where local families will show you exactly how their floating world is made and maintained. You’ll sit down to a proper à la carte lunch at one of Puno’s best restaurants, with time to breathe and reflect on the morning. And in the afternoon, you’ll walk the ancient grounds of Sillustani, where pre-Inca funerary towers rise against an enormous sky and your guide will bring centuries of Andean history to life.

What to Expect

Your guide picks you up at your hotel in Puno's historic center between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. The day flows naturally from there: a 30–40 minute boat ride to the Uros Islands (roughly 1.5–2 hours on the water and islands combined), then lunch at Tulipans, then a 40-minute drive out to Sillustani for an afternoon of exploring the ruins. You'll be back in Puno by around 5:00–6:00 PM. This is a shared tour with small groups, rarely more than 12–15 people, and your bilingual guide speaks English and Spanish throughout. The tour is suitable for most fitness levels. The Uros Islands are flat but soft underfoot; Sillustani involves a gentle 15–20 minute uphill walk on uneven ground, nothing strenuous. The one thing worth preparing for is the altitude: Puno sits at 3,830 meters (12,566 feet), so stay hydrated, take it easy on arrival, and pack layers. Mornings at the lake are cold, afternoons warm up, and the Altiplano sun is stronger than it looks.

Your day begins with a boat ride across the shimmering surface of Lake Titicaca — the highest navigable lake in the world — toward one of the most remarkable communities on Earth. The Uros people have lived on self-made floating islands for centuries, crafting their entire world — homes, boats, fishing platforms, even watchtowers — from totora reeds that grow abundantly in the lake.

When you step onto a Uros island, the ground gives slightly beneath your feet. It's soft, spongy, and a little surreal. Local families will walk you through how the islands are built layer by layer, how they're anchored, and how new sections are added as old ones decompose. You'll see how the same versatile reed that holds the island together also becomes furniture, fuel, and food (the lower white part of the stem is edible, slightly sweet, crisp, and tasting faintly of the lake). Your bilingual guide will translate stories from the residents: how the islands drift slightly with the wind, how children grow up here, and how the community balances tradition with the realities of modern Peru. You'll visit two different Uros communities, giving you a broader picture of island life rather than just a single choreographed stop.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can take an optional ride on a traditional totora-reed boat, hand-woven in the same style the Uros have used for generations. (This is arranged and paid directly with the local community; it's a lovely addition if you have the time.)
