Inca Manco Capac airport sits on the plain outside Juliaca at about 3,825 metres. Puno is the same height, 3,827 at the plaza. Both are higher than Cusco, and most people arriving here have come from Lima, at sea level. That is nearly four thousand metres of altitude in under two hours. It is the fastest ascent available to anyone in Peru, and your body has had no time to prepare.
The part that catches people out is the timing. Altitude symptoms usually arrive six to twelve hours after landing, not on landing. You walk off the aircraft feeling fine and spend the afternoon walking round Puno. Then you feel dreadful at nine in the evening. The hour in our car is the start of that window. The driver will use it to say what helps.
What helps is dull. Rest for the rest of the day. Drink more water than you want. Eat little, skip the wine on the first night, and do not book anything hard for the next morning. Coca tea is in every hotel lobby and does no harm. Most people are fine by the second day. A headache that keeps getting worse, vomiting, or breathlessness while sitting still are different. The hotel can get a doctor quickly.

Coca tea is offered in nearly every hotel in Puno and is a normal local remedy. It is mild and there is no reason not to try it. Most people are fine. A headache, some breathlessness on stairs and a poor first night of sleep are all common and pass. What is not routine is a headache that keeps worsening, vomiting, confusion, or breathlessness while sitting still. Those need medical attention rather than more water, and your hotel can arrange it quickly.

Juliaca Airport to Lake Titicaca
We need three things from you before you fly. Your flight number, your arrival date and time, and the name and address of your hotel in Puno. That is all. If the hotel is not booked yet, send it the moment it is.
From there we watch the flight. The driver is scheduled against your actual arrival time rather than the one printed on your ticket, so a delay moves the pickup with it rather than leaving you to sort it out on landing.
When you come through, the driver is standing in arrivals with a sign showing your name. Juliaca is a small airport with a single arrivals exit, so there is no hunting through a crowd for the right person. Once you have taken another vehicle we can no longer help.
The drive runs south out of Juliaca and across open altiplano towards the lake. Flat, high, wide country, with Titicaca appearing on the approach to Puno. It takes about an hour. Your driver lives in Puno, so ask them anything you want to know about the place before you get there.
